Take it from the heartbroken and frustrated fans of Nintendo properties that have lain dormant for years&#8211;decades, even. Until very recently, Star Fox was perhaps the most notable example of this.<\/p>\n<p>The grand return of Fox McCloud and the crew came with little warning, with the reveal of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/articles\/fox-mccloud-is-in-the-super-mario-galaxy-movie-over-a-decade-since-his-last-game\/1100-6539028\/\">Fox in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie<\/a> and news of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/articles\/star-fox-for-nintendo-switch-2-announced\/1100-6539827\/\">upcoming Switch 2 game<\/a> blowing up the internet like a Smart Bomb. But while Star Fox devotees celebrate these developments, I&#8217;m left contemplating why this series came back&#8211;and why others aren&#8217;t getting a similar treatment.<\/p>\n<p><video data-embed-type=\"video\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-2DFqUsBOmM\" data-width=\"100%\" data-height=\"100%\" data-embed-url=\"\/\/cdn.embedly.com\/widgets\/media.html?src=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fembed%2F-2DFqUsBOmM%3Fwmode%3Dopaque%26feature%3Doembed&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;display_name=YouTube&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D-2DFqUsBOmM&amp;image=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2F-2DFqUsBOmM%2Fhqdefault.jpg&amp;type=text%2Fhtml&amp;schema=youtube\"><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve long been under the impression that Nintendo sidelines properties that it simply doesn&#8217;t have any new ideas for. That was famously the reason why a Metroid game never materialized on Nintendo 64, with <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20030505103133\/http:\/\/cube.ign.com\/articles\/377\/377563p2.html\">Shigeru Miyamoto saying<\/a> that developers &#8220;couldn&#8217;t come up with any concrete ideas or vehicle at that time.&#8221; Star Fox itself skipped the Wii era, with <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/2850146\/shigeru-miyamoto-nintendo-interview\/\">Miyamoto recalling<\/a> that Nintendo &#8220;didn\u2019t find an idea that really brought that together for the Wii.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Besides Star Fox, the Nintendo<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unless it&#8217;s Mario or Zelda, there seems to be no guarantee that a Nintendo franchise will remain a constant presence in the company&#8217;s portfolio.
