Bungie has stepped in to deny a rumor that it planned to merge the Destiny and Marathon IPs amid continued questions about the future of both franchises.
The rumor, which has been doing the rounds online this week, was that Bungie was testing reworking Marathon and Destiny into a single IP. But, according to Marathon creative director Julia Nardin, that’s untrue.
“As someone who’s worked on both Destiny and Marathon, I can confirm that the “leak” about us merging the two IPs is fake,” Nardin said in a post on Twitter / X. “They share a lot of the same Bungie DNA, but like siblings they’re also their own independent entities. Please don’t believe everything you read online.”
It has of course been a tumultuous time for Bungie, Destiny, and Marathon. Marathon began life as an ultra hardcore extraction shooter, but Bungie has been retooling it to play more like Destiny since as the game has struggled for players. Meanwhile, Bungie stopped work on Destiny 2 to focus on Marathon — upsetting Destiny fans in the process.
