In retro news, I’m celebrating the 33rd birthday of Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, a fighter whose industry impact cannot be overstated. Obviously, 1991’s World Warrior was the opening jab, but the Champion Edition revision was a $2.3 billion leg sweep that put Capcom in the top three highest-grossing arcade games of all time list. Nineties gaming gromets like myself queued outside of arcades for the $1 privilege to play this, thanks to its mirror match permissiveness, playable bosses, balance tweaks, and more unique takes on Ryu and Ken.
