Just over two years ago, Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai launched his YouTube channel to give fans around the world an inside glimpse at game development and design. Now, Sakurai has posted his final video for the channel while teasing a new project that may be his first game since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released in 2018.
According to Sakurai, he was approached to work on a video game proposal in 2021, around the time he was adding Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s final DLC character, Sora, to the game. Sakurai didn’t share any concrete details about the new project, but he hinted that it may be revealed in the near future.
“I received a request to write a game proposal, which I finished at lightning speed,” said Sakurai via IGN. “I’m sorry I can’t share more about this project, but assuming we’re able to get it made, it should be announced sooner or later.”
While that isn’t much to go on, we can probably rule out another Super Smash Bros. game from Sakurai. In 2021, he spoke about the need for the series to grow beyond him, and he wasn’t sure where the game series could
